Heartburn Medicines Can Result In Kidney Failure

It is now know that heartburn medications like Nexium and Prilosec can cause kidney failure. Our heartburn medication lawyers are filing kidney failure lawsuits for individuals who have used Nexium, Prilosec and other PPIs and have a diagnosis of kidney failure. These drugs  have been associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), sometimes leading to kidney failure.

What Are Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)?

PPIs are   prescribed to treat duodenal ulcers, peptic and stomach ulcers, reduce acid production so the esophagus can heal and reduce the symptoms of acid reflux. There are several different generic names and brands names for PPIs such as Prilosec and Nexium.

People Diagnosed With Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Lead author Benjamin Lazarus from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia and other research authors published in JAMA speculate the rise in numbers of individuals diagnosed with CKD in the past years can be attributed to the increased number of people using PPIs to treat acid reflux. People were using  these heartburn drugs for  extended periods and taking doses higher than recommended are at risk.
