Zimmer, Inc. recalled their prosthetic hip implant in July 24th, 2008. Their Durum Cup hip replacement has been implanted in 12,000+ patients when it was introduced in the US in 2006.

If you are uncertain if you have either of the recalled Hip Systems, contact your orthopedic surgeon. Your primary care physician or the hospital where the surgery took place should be able to provide you with the name of your surgeon if you can’t recall who performed the original surgery.

Zimmer Hip Replacement Failure

The Zimmer Durum Cup was approved in the United States in 2006 for use during total hip replacement. The Durom Cup was designed for use in young, active patients who were likely to outlive a conventional hip replacement.

The component has been implanted in over 12,000 patients. According to information released by Zimmer, some doctors have encountered post-hip surgery problems requiring further surgery and revision as much as 5.7% of the time

The problems with the hip implants were brought to light by Los Angeles surgeon Dr. Lawrence Dorr. Dr. Dorr wrote a letter that warned other orthopedists about cup failures his patients were experiencing. According to Dr. Dorr and other physicians, x-rays showed that the socket was separating from bone, rather than fusing with it. This caused severe pain and the need for further surgery for the patient.
